Scotchkote hygienic wall coatings from 3M are helping to deliver optimal cleanliness and protection within a kitchen at a leading hospital in south west England.
The kitchen at Bath and North-East Somerset Hospital is mainly used for reheating meals supplied by an outside caterer and has to adhere to strict hygiene standards, with regular routine inspections by local environmental health officers. It consists of a main preparation and cooking area, a trolley storage area and a dry storage and fridge area.
The use of heavy equipment and trolleys can lead to damage to the plasterboard walls, which has the potential to create hygiene concerns. To protect against this, the plasterboard was covered with two layers of fibre glass and then coated with 3M’s Scotchkote hygienic wall coating.
Easily applicable via brush, roller or spray, the product creates a seamless finish which is quick and easy to clean and contains a reinforced layer for impact resistance, providing a tough, durable finish with optimum UV resistance. The project was undertaken by Totnes-based Hytech Industrial Coatings.
Robin Stedman, estates projects manager at Bath and North-East Somerset Hospital, said: “For this application, we needed a highly flexible solution. We found the Scotchkote hygienic wall coating to be ideal as not only is it quick and easy to apply but it also offers rapid clean down, and very importantly, protects against the impact of trolleys on walls. This negates the possibility of hygiene concerns created by damage to the walls, offering great reassurance to environmental health inspectors about hygiene standards. It is also easy to reapply as and when necessary. We are delighted with our choice of Scotchkote technology which is contributing significantly to our goal of the best possible hygiene standards in the kitchen area.”
