Training assists unemployed

UK Commercial Cleaning Services is offering training and work experience to help the North East’s long-term unemployed get back into work. The cleaning company, run by North-East born entrepreneur Tony Earnshaw, has offered 10 work placements for people between the ages of 18 and 65 who have found themselves out of work due to the recession. UKCC has teamed-up with training provider ESG Sencia as part of the programme, which sees people being given skills in window cleaning, basic commercial cleaning, and customer relations, over a 13 week period.

The aim of the training programme, which is linked to the New Deal scheme, is to give people a boost in their confidence and allow them to add the experience onto their CV. Trainees are based at the company’s Washington hub for four out of five working days and use the fifth day to search for jobs.

Tony Earnshaw, who received investment from Duncan Bannatyne in the last series of Dragons’ Den, decided to offer the training after seeing the devastating effects that the recession is having on workers in the region. He said: “I am a local lad and it is devastating to think that people from the North-East are struggling to find work especially after some have been employed for most of their lives. By offering this training, we hope to show people that their skills can be transferable across a number of business sectors, and that it is not difficult to take the bold step of applying for jobs in a completely different industry. We hope to continue to offer these placements to people from across the North-East and hope that the training helps towards gaining employment.”

Ricky Willis, an employability coach from Sencia, said: “It is fantastic that Tony is offering training opportunities to people, especially at what is such a crucial time in the jobs market. People are finding themselves out of work for a number of reasons within the current climate, training programmes such as these provide active job seekers with the new skills and confidence boost to try something new.”
