Success comes in threes

At the annual RBS South London Business Awards in May, Chequers Contract Services Ltd walked away with the ‘Best Sustainable Business Award’.

The gala dinner and awards ceremony took place in a lavish marquee on the pitch at Selhurst Park, home of Crystal Palace FC. Over 575 people attended with 52 companies being shortlisted.

This high profile awards programme is open to any company located in one or more of the 12 London Boroughs south of the River Thames. They provide a showcase for businesses ranging from one-person operations to companies employing hundreds of people; from firms whose clients are drawn from the local community to those with international customers.

Chequers Contract Cleaning Ltd is an established family business, launched in 1987 to deliver first class cleaning and building services with the added value of that family feel. Kate Ward, sales & marketing director, said: "I am in total shock as we didn’t think we were going to win this at all but I am so pleased for the staff as it was a real team effort."

Inspiring and encouraging local corporate social responsibility, Chequers was recognised for its support of charities in the local community whilst at the same time working hard to reduce its environmental impact by saving energy, increasing recycling and reducing pollution through new technologies. CSR is ingrained throughout the company and all staff clearly understand the positive business and community benefits.

Peter Pledger, South London Business’ chief executive, said: "This award ceremony emphasises not only the strength of local business in south London, but also the sheer innovation, diversity and entrepreneurial spirit to be found here."
