Staying the course at the University of Bath

A range of Altro flooring and wall cladding is being used throughout student accommodation at the University of Bath as part of a six-year refurbishment programme. So far, 3000m2 of AltroSmooth Ethos flooring has been laid in the student bedrooms. This timber-look sheet smooth flooring brings warmth to any location and is ideal for a range of educational applications. It can be welded for a seamless, hygienic surface, making it suitable for areas where infection control and high standards of cleanliness are paramount. Its surface has a factory finished PU coating for added protection and ease of cleaning.

In addition, 500m2 of Altro Suprema II safety flooring has been installed in the kitchen diners, and 400m2 in the toilets. Offering a palette of 40 colours, Altro Suprema II has been developed in consultation with customers, architects, end users and colour experts, to offer a choice of colours from subtle to bold and inventive. Ideal for office, education and hospital applications, Altro Suprema II incorporates Altrosan bacteriostat for enhanced hygiene.

Altro Whiterock Chameleon wall cladding in various colours has been put up in the kitchen diners to create a bold finish. With vibrant solid colours and more natural tones in a high gloss finish, Altro Whiterock Chameleon is suited to a variety of applications, it is highly durable and provides a water-tight, wipe clean, smooth surface.

In the corridors, 300m2 of Altro Timbersafe II safety flooring has been installed to match existing flooring. Timbersafe features nine true wood-look finishes, and is a sparkle free flooring for busy public areas where spills may create a slip hazard. It is therefore ideal for applications where safety and aesthetics need to work hand in hand.

Martin Oldland, building surveying director at specifier, Kendal Kingscott, commented: “The university has specified AltroSmooth Ethos, Altro Suprema II and Altro Whiterock Chameleon again and again for this long-term refurbishment programme. These products meet all their needs for aesthetics, practicality and ease of cleaning. They have found a range they are very happy with.”

Lee Knighton, senior contracts manager at installer English County Contracts has been laying the Altro products throughout the duration of the project. He said: “We have very tight deadlines and a great deal of work to get through, so having the Altro product range to work with makes our life a lot easier because they are so quick and simple to install. The project is going very smoothly and the client is delighted with the finished results.”

Patrick Abbott, property manager at the University of Bath, said: “We have 3000 bedrooms and associated spaces and kitchens to refurbish, and on a project as large as this we decided it would be more practical to choose one reliable supplier. Altro has always been my manufacturer of choice for several reasons. They give us excellent service; we have one dedicated contact, we get great back-up and any issues are rectified immediately. The products are superb. AltroSmooth Ethos is hard-wearing, easy to maintain and it looks great. In the kitchens, spillages are an issue with students, so good safety flooring is essential. Altro Suprema II is proving very successful in these areas. The Altro Whiterock Chameleon is also a very popular choice. Its striking colours mean we can create designs that are a little out of the ordinary - great social spaces that students want to be in. We are more than happy with Altro and will continue to use them in the future.”
