Spanish exports of cleaning products to the UK fall by 8%

The value of overseas sales of cleaning and professional hygiene products from Spain by members of ASFEL increased overall by 2% in 2018 to reach 718.6 million euros. However, during the same period, exports to the UK fell by 8%.

This is shown in a report by ASFEL, the Association of Spanish Manufacturers of Cleaning and Hygiene Products on the results of foreign trade in the sector.

According to the report, among the top 10 export destinations of the sector are the traditional and mature markets of the EU (such as Portugal, France or Italy) and the countries of North Africa.

Portugal continues to maintain its leading position in the classification of export countries for the sector with a share of 24% of the total exported.

The European Union accounts for the majority of international exports with a share of 79%, which includes, together with Portugal, countries such as France, Italy and Germany. Exports to the top five export countries, except for the United Kingdom, have all experienced growth during 2018, with Germany standing out with 28%, Italy 18% and France 13%.

Exports to the top 20 export countries, except for the United Kingdom, Algeria, Sweden, Belgium, Turkey, the United States and Mexico, have experienced growth in 2018.

Overseas sales of cleaning and professional hygiene products for 2014-2018 have increased overall by 10%. Exports to the top 20 export countries, with the exception of France, the United Kingdom, Algeria, Belgium and Libya, have all experienced growth in the period 2014-2018.

It also highlights the significant decline in exports to the United Kingdom, a market that in 2014 was in 5th place in terms of Spanish exports and is currently also in 5th place, but is now a market to which exports have declined by 25%, currently accounting for just 6% of total exports. By contrast, exports to the United States in the same period increased by 25%. According to the association "the 2% overall increase in cleaning and hygiene exports in 2018 shows the outstanding effort being made by Spanish manufacturers in this sector.

During 2018, according to ASFEL, traditional markets for the Spanish sector such as France, Italy or Germany showed significant double-digit increases in exports.

ASFEL is active in three fundamental areas: promotion, project management, grants and lobbying. As the leading trade body in the field of export marketing for the cleaning and hygiene sector in Spain, ASFEL ensures that public administrations, both regionally and nationally, will continue to defend and support exporting companies in their international initiatives and projects.
