On 21 December last year, OCS celebrated the success of 10 graduates of the company’s inaugural Facilitating Futures Talent Programme. Welcomed by Jane Sheard, OCS CEO of Australia and New Zealand, who championed the scheme, the ceremony saw the 10 graduates present what they’d learned from the year-long programme, followed by a leadership talk from polar explorer Alan Chambers, who was awarded the MBE for determined leadership in constant adversity.
The participants were selected through a dedicated software and senior management selection process. Using a nine-box talent grid to measure performance and potential, all middle managers were plotted and invited to apply for the talent programme in the Rising Stars, Star Performer or Strong Performer categories.
Over the course of a year, the group followed a challenging self-development journey to explore their strengths and developmental areas, build on current competencies and acquire new skills to be even more effective in their current role, and to prepare them as a future leader. The programme included engaging employees, feedback, and coaching and strategic thinking, as well as attending the FranklinCovey Seven habits of highly effective people programme.
One of the graduates, Sue Hull, regional operations manager, said: “I feel I have developed my skills as a leader and have a more positive influence on my colleagues, team and the wider organisation. After completion of 25 years’ service, I feel I have more confidence and gained the additional management and leadership experience to progress further when the opportunity arises.”

The programme was created by Sarah Welch, OCS HR transformation director, alongside Shaun Price and Trevor Jarrett of consultancy Change Creation. Jarrett said: “In our experience too many businesses are forced to recruit externally for new leadership talent as a result of poor succession planning. OCS has demonstrated considerable foresight in the development of these people, having initially recognised their exceptional potential. Change Creation is proud to have been involved in this inaugural programme from design through to delivery. Our legacy is that the participants who graduated today can now manage their current roles more effectively and more confidently navigate the journey towards more senior leadership roles.”
