New device extinguishes litter bin fires

Leafield Environmental has launched FirefighterT, an automatic fire suppression feature for its popular Envirobank, outdoor litter-bin.

Should a fire breakout inside a bin, the device activates by a sacrificial bulb that bursts at a given temperature, releasing a powder discharge from an extinguisher for some eight seconds. Extensive tests have shown the device to be extremely effective in putting out fires before they 'take hold', with bins being fully serviceable after the fire has been extinguished.

The extinguisher unit is fitted from the front of the Envirobank and sits neatly in a recess between the two skins. It is not visible from the outside and does not interfere with the passage of litter or the removal of the wheelie bin liner.

Discharged extinguishers can be removed and replaced easily, thanks to quick-release mechanism of the holder. The bin aperture is fitted with a metal flap, designed to help starve the fire of oxygen and to reduce the risk of incandescent materials escaping from the bin and spreading the problem.

The company recommends that a regular emptying, inspection and maintenance programme should be instigated to ensure the FirefighterT remains serviceable or has been discharged and needs replacing.
