McDonalds scoops top Loo of the Year prize

McDonald's has won the UK Overall Winners Trophy in the 22nd Loo of the Year Awards competition to find the very best 'away from home' toilets in the UK.

Awards managing director, Mike Bone, said: "The UK's restaurant and hospitality sectors are placing significantly increasing importance on provision of first class toilets that contain the facilities their customers need and expect when visiting their premises. McDonald's has continued to improve the quality of their customer toilets since winning National Awards in previous years.”

Entries for the 2009 Loo of the Year Awards continued at high levels despite the economic situation and over 1500 entries were received. Standards in awards entrant's toilets also improved - 58% of the total entries achieved the top 5 Star grading (42% in 2008).

Other major UK Trophy winners were: TC Contractors for individual category entries; Brighton and Hove City Council for public toilet entries; J D Wetherspoon for corporate provider entries for the second year running; East Lothian Council for accessible facilities; South Lanarkshire Council for adult/child changing facilities; ASDA for babychange facilities; and The Camping & Caravanning Club for family friendly facilities.

Trophy winners in the associated Attendant of the Year Awards, for the very important people who put the sparkle and pride into the UK's toilets, were: Brighton & Hove City Council (individual attendant team), Butlins (in-house cleaning team) and Healthmatic (external contactor team).

Representatives from the top twenty Local Authorities public toilet providers - the Loo of the Year Awards 'Premier League', were also honoured at the awards presentation event held on 4 December at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham. Magician Paul Daniels provided the after lunch entertainment.
The 2009 Awards were run in association with headline sponsor Airdri, the UK based manufacturer of warm air dryers, with additional sponsorship provided by Remploy and The British Cleaning Council. The four national tourism bodies - Enjoy England, Visit Scotland, Visit Wales and The Northern Ireland Tourist Board continued their support.
