Green Achiever award for PSS

Essex-based Property Support Services (UK) Ltd (PSS), which provides contract cleaning services, ground maintenance as well as other key support services to businesses throughout the country, has attained Green Achiever award gold status.

Developed by environmental consultancy E4environment, a business or organisation interested in the Green Achiever scheme normally starts by registering free at www.greenachiever.co.uk, completing a short questionnaire to outline its responsibilities and receiving a listing in the Green Achiever online directory. The first level is self-assessment, which includes a declaration of environmental commitment. Silver is the next and demonstrates the positive action taken in the way a company cares for the environment. The highest level, gold, is attained following an extensive environmental audit.

PSS’s Green Achiever gold status is in addition to a number of other certifications, including ISO14001, ISO 9001 and National Britannia’s Safe Contractor award. Mike Rust, managing director at PSS, explained the company’s approach: "Through best practice, appropriate monitoring systems, realistic target setting, meaningful annual reporting and enforceable proactive reviews we aim to constantly improve our environmental performance. Site managers actively talk with clients about performance indicators and encourage them to take action to reduce their environmental impacts by providing information and feedback. PSS continuously monitors the market for environmentally friendly cleaning products and, once purchased, ensures they are delivered direct to the premises we are working at, thus avoiding additional fuel consumption. In our own offices we recycle as much as possible and store information electronically to reduce paper usage - e-invoicing and e-contracts are standard practice and, where possible, directors, managers and staff all use public transport to travel to work.”

Deborah Cairns, operations manager at E4environment with specific responsibility for the Green Achiever scheme, said: “Consumers, whether they are public or business to business, are demanding more from retailers, manufacturers and suppliers. For example, more recyclable products and packaging, as well as services and products that are environmentally friendly. The staff and management at PSS are demonstrating a conviction to enhancing their green status that not only sets a standard for others to follow but will save the organisation money too. Congratulations to them on gaining the gold accreditation.”
