Desks contain 400 times more germs than a toilet seat

Anti-bacterial protection specialist Microban is searching for additional European partners within the stationery supplies sector following research that reveals that the office environment is a hot spot for the cross contamination of germs and bacteria.

Microban already has a track record of success in the children’s stationery products sector in Europe, where its protection is added to a range of Westcott’s soft touch scissors, rulers and pencil sharpeners for younger children, preventing the growth of germs and cross contamination when sharing the items. The addition of an antibacterial product feature has provided Westcott with an important point of differentiation in children’s stationery and an impressive growth in sales.

Paul McDonnell, managing director of Microban Europe, which has UK offices based in Cannock, Staffordshire, said that stationery items such as plastic folders, staplers, hole punches, rulers and even usb sticks used in the office workplace environment were obvious products to which Microban technology could be applied to follow the success of the children’s stationery range for Westcott. He said: “Offices are a hotbed of cross contamination - our hands are continually touching our desks, our keyboards and, without noticing it, we touch our faces and eyes and even grab a bite to eat from the sandwich balanced on the desk. Adding Microban to office products provides an impressive level of protection against bacteria, helping to minimise the spread of illness-causing bacteria. We believe that there is strong potential in Europe for licensees to achieve similar results in local markets, where Microban can provide an extremely cost effective means of differentiating your products from competitors with a genuine benefit.”

Research carried out by Microban into germs on common office items show these typical results:
• Telephone: 25,127 germs per square inch • Desktop: 20,961 germs per square inch
• Keyboard: 3295 germs per square inch
• Computer mouse: 1676 germs per square inch
• Toilet seat: 49 germs per square inch

Microban is incorporated at the point of product manufacture which means the antibacterial protection is locked in and cannot wash off or wear away. The Microban Certification Programme ensures that quality testing is regularly carried out and that antibacterial claims are technically supported.
