Airport scoops 'overall winner' LOY award

Gatwick Airport, the world’s busiest single runway airport, was awarded the Overall Tork Loo of the Year Award trophy at the Loo of the Year Awards annual presentation event in December. This is the first time in the award programme’s 29 year history that an airport has achieved this top award and was in recognition of Gatwick being awarded platinum awards for every one of its 13 entries. Gatwick was also awarded the UK and Ireland market sector award for transport.

The award programme’s managing director, Mike Bone, said: “Gatwick Airport first entered the Loo of the Year Awards in 2015 with two entries in the South Terminal and won the national category award for England in the airports category and the UK and Ireland market sector award for transport. All its 2016 entries were exceptionally clean and well maintained. Gatwick works closely with its cleaning contractor ISS to ensure that the highest toilet cleaning standards are maintained despite coping with the needs of more than 40 million passengers each year.”

Baba Sechan, an employee of Birmingham’s We Clean, became the first person to be awarded the Attendant of the Year Award’s Individual Attendant trophy for the second time. Sechan was previously presented with this award in the 2015 programme. JD Wetherspoon was presented with the in-house cleaning team trophy and City Facility Management, which cleans Asda Stores, was presented with the external contractor team trophy.

Other major UK and Ireland trophy winners included Asda, Bluewater Shopping Centre, Buttercrane Shopping Centre Newry, Heathrow Airport, intu, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Oxford City Council, and Richmond Royal Park. The winners were selected from entries in 60 entry categories across all market sectors.

Nearly 400 guests from throughout the UK, including representatives from leading cleaning and FM companies, attended the awards presentation event at St Johns Hotel in Solihull. The 2016 awards were run in association with headline sponsor Tork, and associate sponsors Clos-o-Mat and Dolphin Solutions. Danfo, Evolve Security and Willings Services also supported this year’s awards.

The Loo of the Year Awards celebrates its 30-year anniversary in 2017 and the awards event will be held on Friday 8 December 2017.
