WCEC: The Master’s Aspirations - Building on Progress

Darren Marston, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, discusses his hopes for his tenure over the next year.

Taking on the role of Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC) is both an honour and a responsibility. The Company has always supported professionalism in the cleaning sector, and my goal for the coming year is to ensure that existing initiatives like the Chartered Practitioners Register, continue to grow, and new ones come to fruition.

Strengthening leadership for future success

One of my first priorities has been securing the right leadership to help guide the Company forward. A critical step was the appointment of our new Clerk, Sam Rogers. His professional background - spanning policy consulting, NGO leadership, legal advocacy, and publishing - brings a dynamic perspective to the WCEC. I am confident that, with Sam on board, we have the right leadership to keep the Company moving forward effectively.

A strong focus on charitable giving

Charitable work has long been at the heart of Environmental Cleaners’ mission, as it is with every livery. In the year ahead, we will continue that focus. The livery’s Charitable Trust does exceptional work, and we aim to raise substantial funds over the coming year to support its initiatives. Several key events have been tabled with this in mind:

  • Three Peaks Challenge – while a physically demanding event, it brings people together while raising vital funds. Our new Freeman Bob Spence will be leading this charge and we hope to garner support from across the membership.
  • Charity Gala Dinner (8 November 2025) – timed to coincide with the Lord Mayor’s Show, this evening at the fabulous Skyline Tower Suites promises to be a highlight of the year and a draw for supporters
  • Sporting lunch (December 2025).

I will do my very best to help achieve the maximum amount for the Charitable Trust this year. However, regardless of the final sum, what matters most is that we put in the effort and create opportunities for meaningful contributions.

Elevating the cleaning profession

For years, we have advocated for the professionalisation of the cleaning industry. Historically, the sector has been perceived as a gateway for unskilled workers rather than a career path with long-term growth potential. But times have changed. The rise of AI, robotics, and technological advancements has transformed the industry, introducing new skill sets and creating diverse opportunities. Today, the cleaning profession offers careers in technology, finance, HR, legal compliance, and management - far beyond the traditional roles that many assume.

Despite this progress, the industry remains fragmented, with little meaningful collaboration among trade bodies and organisations. That’s why championing the Chartered Practitioners Register (CPR) is so important. No longer just a privilege of other professions, like accountants, architects or surveyors, our industry can denote their experts with Chartered Environmental Cleaners, and the post nominals C.Env.Cln

To support this, we have secured a public collaboration with British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), offering a range of training modules tailored to different levels of expertise:

  • Practical Cleaning Experience and Licence to Practise (LTP) – a foundational step for individuals entering the profession.
  • Cleaning Professionals Skills Suite (CPSS) – a comprehensive training programme for specialised skills.
  • Accredited Trainer (AT) programme – supporting experienced professionals in mentoring the next generation.
  • Accredited Trainer Package – a cost-effective bundle of industry-recognised qualifications.

These courses create a clear and logical progression for professionals seeking to establish a lasting career in cleaning. They also help combat the historic lack of momentum in lobbying for professional recognition at the government level. This initiative has received strong backing from industry leaders, including Denise Hanson, Chairman of the Environmental Cleaners’ Education Committee and a Board member of BICSc.

As part of our commitment to this initiative, Neil Spencer-Cook, Managing Director of the BICSc, addressed members at the Environmental Cleaners’ Summer Court luncheon on 15 July, where he spoke in greater detail about the significance of the CPR and our industry-wide collaboration.

Looking ahead

The cleaning sector is undergoing a transformative shift, and I believe this year will be instrumental in shaping its future. With a strong leadership team, ambitious charitable fundraising, and a renewed focus on professional development through the Chartered Practitioners Register, we are setting the stage for lasting improvements.

I am excited about what lies ahead and look forward to working with our members and partners to drive meaningful change in the cleaning industry.
