Tork tissue manufacturer SCA Tissue Europe has notched up yet another environmental success at the North East Business Awards, which took place last month. The company’s Prudhoe Mill in Northumberland beat off stiff competition to win the Environmental Management Award in the annual competition.
Prudhoe Mill was shortlisted for the award in February after winning the Tyneside and Northumberland Environmental Management heat ahead of other environmentally-friendly companies including the Northumberland Wildlife Trust.
At the finals ceremony at Harwick Hall, County Durham, Prudhoe beat an organic vegetable firm and a municipal services company to first place.
SCA Tissue Europe environmental manager Stewart Begg said: "This award provides the confirmation that the mill’s activities and environmental programme’s are proactive and leading from the front. They should be very proud of their achievements."
Prudhoe Mill reduced its water consumption, emissions to water and the amount of waste sent for landfill in 2007.
Other recent environmental measures have included the installation of more energy-efficient boilers and the introduction of recycling schemes for plastic and wood waste. The mill has also invested in a shredder and baler which allow the machine cores - used for rolling up the tissue sheet - to be recycled.
