Designing a bespoke cleaning solution

The Design Museum, which is set to become the world’s leading museum of contemporary design and architecture as it reopens in a new location, has chosen Julius Rutherfoord as its specialist cleaning and soft FM services contractor.

Following a long search for larger premises to expand its activities, the Design Museum selected a landmark from the 1960s - a Grade II listed building in Kensington High Street, West London - as its new home. Opened to the public on 24 November last year, the facility has been transformed into a 21st Century museum, and will have three times more space than the previous location. The museum includes the brand-new Swarovski Foundation Centre for Learning, the 202-seat Bakala Auditorium and a dedicated gallery to display its permanent collection, which will be accessible free of charge.

The contract incorporates a broad range of cleaning and facilities management services including front of house gallery and facilities cleaning, back of house office cleaning, security, waste management, grounds maintenance, and window cleaning. Services provided by Julius Rutherfoord will include cleaning, provision of a logistics team and traffic marshals, full time porters, and additional cleaning based around special events.

Brian Reeves, head of facilities at the Design Museum, said: “Following a competitive tender process, it was evident that Julius Rutherfoord demonstrated both the experience and genuine understanding of our design values required to deliver the planned and reactive services expected by the Design Museum during both the transition from practical completion and beyond. The company combined an impressive market-leading process for staff vetting, successful experience of major visitor attractions and the flexibility of being located in the heart of London. Through its proven solutions for improving buildings environmental performance, Julius Rutherfoord will enable us to realise our environmental goals over the coming years. We can trust it to build strong bonds with our other key partners to ensure we deliver a world class experience for visitors to the Design Museum.”

Marcus Heap, Julius Rutherfoord’s sales and marketing director, added: “This is a fantastic contract and we look forward to working with the Design Museum at such an exciting stage in its growth. This world-class cultural venue is set to welcome millions of people through its doors and we are focused on enhancing the visitor experience. Our role is to support the museum to promote the very best in design innovation.”
