CSSA speaks up for role of cleaning

CSSA director general Andrew Large was delighted to be a panellist at the Westminster Health Forum keynote seminar: Healthcare Associated Infections and Patient Safety last month.

The seminar discussed all aspects of HAIs in the UK and was a valuable opportunity to promote the role of cleaning in the cutting of infection rates.

Speaking after the seminar, Andrew Large said: "This has been a most worthwhile event. I am pleased that there seems to be a consensus both that cleaning has a key role to play in the fight against HAIs, but also that it can only play its full part in collaboration with other activities, such as better antibiotic prescribing and hand hygiene."

The seminar had a broad attendance, including Conservative and Liberal Democrat Shadow Ministers and a range of health professionals.

Large concluded: "I hope that this consensus on the importance of cleaning will filter through both to individual NHS Trusts and the Department of Health so that hospital cleaning benefits from the increase in resources that it needs in order to play its full part against infection."
